Lucky to have True Value Hardware in Mystic. They have won a national award for the best local hardware store in the country and I can see why. They have most of what I need, prices are reasonable on most things and there are always plenty of people to help. I may be able to find it cheaper at Home Depot if I want to take an extra two hours out of my day to drive there and walk around trying to find someone who can help me. I always seem to have a box of things I need to return to Home Depot sitting in the back of my car since whatever help they do provide is often wrong. In the end, I find myself back at True Value, saves me money in the end.

Knowledgeable and helpful staff, my first preference over big box or online

Unfriendly atmosphere, high prices. Other than that they have mostly everything you need.

I go there often and have always liked the place. I went there today looking for a filter for my Craftsman vacuum. The filters they had said they fit more than the Rigid vacuums. I had the Craftsman number but there was no crossover chart. (I would take a 1/4 point off for this) They had a filter that looked like it would work except for the metal plate where the fastener went on mine. I asked at the desk and the guy looked it up for me and I could see the search came up empty so I left. The guy actually chased me down in the parking lot to tell me it was the right filter! I bought it and it fits! It's longer than the Craftsman filter so it doesn't need the hole for the fastener. It's $10.00 less too!

I purchased two "brand new" propane tanks from here a 40lb and a 30lb. 40lb was $100 and 30lb was $80. They store them outside and you pay inside first then pick them up out back. Upon inspection both tanks have surface rust and a date stamp of 2014. These tanks are already 2 years old. Word of advice inspect stuff that you buy from them, that they store outdoors, BEFORE purchasing. I would have been better going to tractor supply and getting shiny new tanks with a more current date for about $30 less.
